SS 310: Aging and Sexuality with Ken Haslam, Belle Sheperd, Joel Kann, and Duncan – Recorded Live at Desire Resort

3

Those of us young in the world and in non-monogamy don't spend a lot of time thinking about aging and in how it affects our play partners, our relationships, and our own sexuality as we progress. During Life on the Swingset's takeover of Desire Resort, Dylan Thomas sat down with Belle Shepherd, Joel Kann, Ken Haslam, and Duncan to discuss as a panel how sexuality changes with age.

Some featured discussion points:

Changes in Spontaneous Desire | Iimportance of Lubricant and Positioning During Sex | Health Issues | Community Support Networks in Polyamory | … and many more.

  1. I’m a fan and have been listening to the Swingset podcast (as well as other swinger-oriented podcasts). I greatly appreciate your concept of “progressive swinging” that includes pan-sexual/queer/non-comforming folks (rather than the “frat-party” attitude and excessive drinking I hear about at most events).
That being said I do have one issue with swinging that is either brushed off or not addressed at all. Based on the podcasts I’ve listened to it seems that one have to very wealthy to participate in swinging (or the “lifestyle”). Hotels, club fees, costumes, to say nothing of the travel expenses to places like Desire, Hedo, or other locales such as Greece, France, etc. (the list could go on and on). I realize that these podcasts are heavily sponsored by resorts, but I’ve never heard a podcast for regular folks who don’t make a butt-load of money. I also realize that all recreational activities cost money, but few folks can afford at least $4000 for a one-week trip (not including travel). It borders on being exclusionary and elitist.
    Your thoughts please.

    • We do take a trip to Cancun, and unfortunately, there’s no way of getting around the fact that it is a significant expense, and the nature of that expense excludes a lot of people. It’s something that’s been on my mind quite a bit and I don’t have a solution for that yet. We aren’t sponsored by Desire, but we have an ongoing working relationship with them,

What we do a lot of is speaking to people about how to put together their own inclusive and welcoming spaces. It’s been a while since we approached the topic of swinging and dating on a budget (so we are going to do it again very soon), but we did address this on episode 181:

None of us are independently rich, and many of us are barely holding our heads above water. I don’t want to give the impression that our best lives are heading to clubs every week and taking a monthly vacation. We don’t, I certainly don’t. My favorite date night is inviting someone, a couple, or people over to my place, which I’ve spent time and effort making into a welcoming place, and seeing what happens.
